Apple Aluminum to a plastic casing for its Watch SE full

Apple is reportedly evaluating the switch from an aluminum to a plastic casing for its upcoming Apple Watch SE, potentially set for launch next year. This development follows recent experimentation with plastic materials, although it was not featured in Apple’s latest announcements.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the transition to a plastic casing is “increasingly likely.” Gurman suggests that this change could offer a wider variety of colors, making the device more appealing, particularly to younger audiences. However, the transition is facing some challenges, which is causing delays in the Watch SE’s launch.

Anticipated Features and Benefits:

  • Advanced Processor: The new Apple Watch SE is expected to be equipped with an upgraded processor, potentially the S9 chip from the Apple Watch Series 9 or the forthcoming S10 chip anticipated for the next-generation Apple Watch Series 10.
  • Cost Reduction: Switching to a plastic casing could significantly reduce manufacturing costs. This cost reduction might allow Apple to incorporate advanced features such as an always-on display and improved electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring, all while potentially offering the device at a more competitive price.
  • Broader Appeal: With a lower production cost and a potentially more affordable price point, the new Watch SE could attract a wider audience, making advanced smartwatch features more accessible.

Context and Comparison:

For comparison, Apple recently transitioned to a titanium casing for the Watch Series 10, with an option also available in aluminum. The Series 10 features larger 42mm and 46mm options and a wider OLED display with an improved aspect ratio. The new chassis design is 9.7mm thick, making it 10 percent thinner than the Apple Watch Series 9.

The potential switch to plastic for the Watch SE could mark a significant shift, offering a balance between affordability and advanced features, broadening its market reach.

Stay tuned for more updates as Apple finalizes the details for its next-generation Watch SE.
