India Rejects Ayatollah Khamenei Remarks on The Best Of

New Delhi: The Indian government has strongly condemned recent remarks made by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei concerning the treatment of Indian Muslims, deeming them “misinformed and unacceptable.” Khamenei’s comments, made on the occasion of Prophet Mohammed’s birth anniversary, drew parallels between the suffering of Muslims in India, Gaza, and Myanmar.

In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs issued a sharp statement, saying, “We strongly deplore the comments made regarding minorities in India by the Supreme Leader of Iran. These are misinformed and unacceptable. Countries commenting on minorities are advised to look at their own record before making any observations about others.”

Khamenei’s post on X (formerly Twitter) stated: “We cannot consider ourselves to be Muslims if we are oblivious to the suffering that a Muslim is enduring in #Myanmar, #Gaza, #India, or any other place.” He added that enemies of Islam have long sought to create division within the Islamic Ummah.

Strained Diplomacy Amid Regional Tensions

The remarks come at a delicate time for India, as it maintains strategic relations with both Iran and Israel, two nations currently locked in escalating hostilities. India depends on West Asia for around 80% of its oil supply, with Iran being a major contributor. Additionally, New Delhi shares security concerns with Teheran related to terrorism originating from Pakistan and Afghanistan, with both nations investing in the Chabahar port.

On the other hand, India’s relationship with Israel has deepened, particularly in the realm of defense and counterterrorism cooperation. India’s swift expression of support for Israel during the recent Hamas attacks underscores the significance of this strategic partnership.

New Delhi’s balancing act between these two important allies in a volatile region makes Khamenei’s remarks particularly sensitive. While Iran’s rhetoric may resonate with some in the region, India is keen to ensure that its domestic matters remain free from external comment.
